Session Seven Replies

Jennifer Grinage,

I like the idea of assigning each student a task.  It sounds like the class worked well together.  At what point did the teacher step in when these problems could not be resolved by the groups first???  I usually step in when it appears that the conversation is getting nowhere.  What is your take on this?

Sincerely,

Amanda Hawkins,

How do you think the observation would have changed if the students were culturally diverse?  Also, did you notice a difference in the other forms of diversity during your observation.  Diversity is not just cultural or based on ethnic background; but race, abilities, age, and gender also can be diverse.

Did the teacher choose the groups or did the students choose the groups?  How do you think that would make a difference?

Sincerely,
Tara Hernandez

Mikala Hill,

Why do you think the teacher did not have the students trust?  What do you think she could have done to show that trust?  It is apparent that she has some good skills, but I am wondering if the students don't take her seriously because she is a kindergarden high school teacher.  Also, I am sure they work in groups, but how does she support that?  What kind of things show the cooperation and peer relationships in these groups?  I know that you mentioned that the students compare answers, but is there any other thing that they do?

Sincerely,
Tara Hernandez

Robert Gunnip,

I think it is great that the students are learning how to handle themselves when visitors are in the room.  It is wonderful to hear that they are learning such an important skill early on.  In addition, students need to learn to use "indoor voices" and I think this teacher is doing an effective job.  It appears that your observation was thorough and I have no further questions.

Sincerely,
Tara Hernandez

Valencia Grinage,

I find it interesting to see your perspective here from an observation of a community college rather than a primary or secondary school. Was there any particular body language or verbal tone that maybe suggested that some of these groups did not work well together?  I read that there were two guys and two girls that were suppose to be in a group, but yet they did not work as a group.

Sincerely,
Tara Hernandez
