Session Four Activity Two
Jennifer Grinage,
I think it is tough to move from one place to another and especially from
one state to the next. Truly you were probably smarter than you gave
yourself credit for. One thing that I have realized is that every person
will have different talents. In school, some talents are more recognized
than others, but they all are talents at that.

Valencia Grinage,
It is interesting to see how your perspective was different than Jennifer's.
You were good at math and science and Jennifer claimed she was not.
I like the way you didn't allow for labels to stop you. Are there other
areas where the two of you are different academically?
Thank you,
Tara Hernandez
Mikala Hill,
I find it interesting that you are teaching for the school you graduated
from. Do you find it weird to teach where you graduated? You
are correct, sometimes average can be a label. There are some students
I remember more than others and they tend to be the brightest students and
the troublemakers. I will have to remember to acknowledge the other
students.
Thank you,
Tara Hernandez
Robert Gunnip,
I appreciate your unique perspective. Of course, I never thought about
the idea of a "late" label or a "get by" label from the perspective that
you were labeled by them. Usually those two labels are found in a variety
of other ways. Have you thought about asking your parents about how
they got the "get around" money????

Amanda Hawkins,
It is so refreshing to see someone overcome their dyslexia and end up going
from Special education to AP courses. I agree that academically it
makes everything wonderful to be in AP courses, but socially it can be harmful.
My experience with the AP track was similar, but I never overcame any type
of dyslexia or learning disability. You are a wonderful inspiration.
I will have to share with my students about you, without sharing the name
of course.
Thank you,
Tara Hernandez
Session Four Activity Three
Valencia Grinage,
It was interesting to see how you view yourself. Not being in a group
can make you more visible, but it can make you less visible because groups
often stand out. I think that you are considering the various views
of perception on this question. It is cool that you think that way.
I am also happy to hear that it is possible to not accept a label.
Do you think that there is a way to train young teens today how to keep from
accepting a label?
Thanks,
Tara Hernandez
Mikala Hill,
It is surprising that you don't feel like you labeled yourself as a result
of school labels, but I think you might have more feelings there than you
expressed. To me, it sounds as if you were somewhat hurt by the fact
that you did not receive more attention than some of your friends.
Hurt often is considered a negative emotion to a label. Do you think
it is possible that you may have seen the label of "average" as negative?
Just a thought!
Thanks,
Tara Hernandez
Jennifer Grinage,
Do you regret any of your behavior now that you are a teacher? I know
it says that you have been paid back, but I just was wondering if you were
sorry about the way you behaved. Do you think that in any way you were
just looking for attention? What do you think is one thing that you
are able to do to help these students that do the same to you that you did
to your teachers, because of your experience?
Thanks,
Tara Hernandez
Robert Gunnip,
Do you think that you still wear any of your labels? How do you feel
about labels that are placed on you now? Do you think because of your
past that you are better able to handle new labels as an adult? I certainly
carry some of my labels with me. Once a nerd, always a nerd.
Being an adult, I feel like these labels bother me less, but at the same
time I have had several years to learn how to handle these labels better.
Thanks,
Tara Hernandez
Amanda Hawkins,
You are the type of student that makes me laugh. I don't need to watch
soaps, because I have entertainment at work. My students that have
the worst attitudes are usually the softest students and those students that
have the best attitudes are the worst kids when they are upset. I think
that kids do the opposite of their label to be rebellious. Do you think
that you went the opposite way of your label to rebel against what others
thought and to show your individuality?
Thanks,
Tara Hernandez
