Session Five Activity Three-Student Fart Case Study

1.    In this particular students case, I would like to know about the student’s relationship with friends versus his family.  It would be beneficial to know what kind of activities the student is involved in with peers. I would also like to know whether Richard has exhibited this type of behavior before in this class and how often he has done so.  In addition, it would be nice to know what kind of family relationship Richard has and if any traumatic events are going on at home.  Something I would also like to know is how much time the family spends with Richard.

2.    Some characteristics of this type of loud, joking attitude often symbolizes something hidden beneath the surface that is being hidden.  The student is being rebellious, acting as a clown, attempting to get attention, and may be insecure.  Several social aspects could be adding to the characteristics of this problem.  One way the problem may be of a social nature is that the student feels like he must conform to those of others that he hangs out with.  Richard may hang out with other boys that are considered troublemakers and in order to fit in he feels like he must conform.  It is also possible that this may be a social issue because of Richard’s desire to stand out. Richard might also have learned the behavior from his parents and he may be imitating their attitude.  He may also be trying to get his parents attention if he is not getting enough attention at home.  There are several possibilities.  On the other hand, one cannot avoid the individual responsibility of the student.  The student is old enough to make his own decisions and he may be choosing to act out.  It is also possible that Richard has low self-esteem and is trying to build himself up by getting attention from others.  There are also several other factors that may influence Richard’s behavior, such as mental issues or learning disabilities.  Some students act out in class because they are unable to understand the material.

3.    The teacher seems to be highly affected by this problem.  It sounds as if she feels a little agitated by the situation.  I also believe the students are affected because they are not learning and they are spending time imitating Richard.

4.    This particular problem may be difficult to handle because the rest of the class is joining in.  The student also may be difficult to discuss this with because they are at a stage where they are still lacking in maturity.  Students who often make wisecracks tend to be rebels and have attitudes when corrected, making it difficult to address the situation.

5.    I would handle this problem by quieting the class and addressing the behavior.  “Class, although the comments may have been humor full, they are still not acceptable.  Any further outburst and we will all have to stay after school to complete this lesson.  Now, what about automobiles?  Automobiles can make air pollution.  What do you think Sammy?”  If the behavior were to continue then I would have to stay after to complete the lesson.
