Session Eight Activity Five-Class Bully
Report
There are several ways to handle situations
in which there are behaviors that threaten the safety of the classroom climate.
One way to address behavioral issues is to do a lesson on the various kinds
of activities that may be threatening and how to deal with such situations.
Training today’s’ youth is a way of getting students to display appropriate
behavior and prevent such situations that may be deemed as threatening from
occurring. Some classes learn from role-play and learning ways that
may be a threat, but often go undealt with. In addition, there are
many workshops that teach teachers how to handle intimidation and it is possible
to find a group that does workshops for students to come and do a workshop
for the class. Sometimes the best way to deal with conflicts like this
is to have a one on one conversation with the student and discuss the behavior.
When continuous threatening behavior continues it is necessary to exert some
form of punishment and then if it still continues then the principal needs
to be involved to help stop the behavior. As a teacher, I would pull
the parents in if the behavior continued after having a one on one discussion
with the individual student.
On a regular basis I have students who return to my class
after having been in trouble for a variety of threatening behaviors and the
student needs to feel accept. The student who was the threat needs
to be accepted and to know that despite his mistake he is still allowed to
be part of the class. Other students who may have been threatened or
have seen such threats need to feel comfortable and to understand that the
student has been punished and the behavior will not occur again. Usually,
when I know the student is returning I make sure that the class understands
that the student has been disciplined accordingly and that such behavior
will not occur again, but mistakes are made and it is important that the
student feel accepted and part of the class. When the student, who
had posed the threat returns, class continues as normal and the student is
welcomed back to class with a smile and a positive attitude from me, the
teacher. If the teacher shows a great deal of acceptance and that everything
is okay, then the students will be more accepting. Students must feel
protected and safe in the learning environment or no knowledge will be obtained.
