| My Homework Policy: Homework is a time for the students to get extra practice in a certain area. I encourage parents to HELP their children with their homework. If I do send home work for your children to do, I consider it important. I have a ZAP policy (Zeros aren't permitted) for homework. Your child will miss recess until the missed homework is turned in. Art time will also be missed if work is not completed by Friday. Excessive missing of homework will result in an after school detention. Monday Message Folders: Your child will be bring home a Weekly Folder. This folder will contain the previous week's work. I encourage you to look through the work with your child and discuss what they have learned. I will also inform you of behavior and how your child is doing in class. Please take the time to sign this folder so I will know that you have been shown the work. Children not returning their signed folder the next day will have to snip a conduct letter. The last six weeks is a very hetic TAKS time. You will not receive weekly grades for the last six weeks of school. If you EVER have any questions, please feel free to contact me through the Monday Folder or call the school and arrange a conference with me. Reading: Every child is expected to read 30 minutes each night (Monday - Thursday) and one night of the weekend.. Students will have a reading log in their reading folder. They have to get a parent's signature upon completion of their nightly reading. One night's missed reading equals two days of recess. Student achievement is linked to reading. If you want an intelligent child, encourage them to read. Your child will bring home an AR book each week. When your child finishes reading their AR book, they will take a 10 question test on the computer about their book. This earns your child AR points they use to win nice prizes. Each child is required to get 2 points a week. I will take a weekly grade from the AR test from our reading unit. Language Arts Spelling: Each week your child will get a list of 20 spelling words. They have until Friday to complete 100 points of our spelling contract. The contract is due on Friday. Your child will be given a spelling test. The words I am choosing to give your child to spell are the most used words in the English language. For your child to communicate successfully, they need to know how to spell these words. A copy of the spelling contract and each week's spelling words are located on this website. Grammar: We will complete several grammar passages each week. These are short paragraph with mistakes in grammar, punctuation, capitazliation, and spelling. They will be completed in class, unless your child has not finished all their work, then they will become homework. They will be tested on this on their TAKS writing test. Composition Writing: Our class will begin a new composition every Monday. The first few weeks of school we will learn how to write a composition. They will be required to brainstorm ideas, put them in a good order, write a rough draft, edit and revise the rough draft, and then produce a rough copy. They may need to finish the rough copy if they have not completed it in class. This is tested on the state TAKS writing test. Math: I rarely send home math homework. Most of our practice is done in class. The main thing your children have to do at home is to memorize their multiplication tables. This has to be done at home. We only have two weeks to review math facts. Multiplication tables are a third grade skill and should be mastered by 4th grade. Science: Most of our science work is completed in class. Your child will get grades from the organization of their science notebook, lab work, daily work, and tests. Social Studies: Our Social Studies is integrated into our reading. Children will only have social studies homework that they fail to finish during class time. Art: Art is a fun, relaxing time of self expression for our students. Each student will earn an E each week in art if they complete their project. If they do not complete their project, they will earn a U. I have alloted enough time for each project to be completed in class. |
