Consequences......... One - Verbal Warning. Two - Name in conduct book and loss of half of recess. Three - Step down. Loss of all recess. Four - Another step down and parent phone call. Five - Final step down results in an office referral.
Incentives for good conduct........... Each six weeks... Students who retain an E average for the entire six weeks will be invited to the E party. Last six weeks.... Each year 4th grade has a "Lock In" for good behavior. This lock is held the last few weeks of school. Only children with exceptional behavior are invited.
Students will begin each six weeks and each day with an E in conduct. Their job is to keep that E.
Other Incentives.... Students can earn tickets for good behavior. I draw a name from the ticket bucket every Friday. The winning ticket wins that week's prize. Students can save up their tickets and earn back snipped letters of conduct. Each student sits with a team. Teams can earn marbles for their table. At the end of each six weeks, the marbles are counted. The team with the most marbles earns a surpise. Verbal Praise. I like to let the children know when they are doing a good job. Being well behaved is expected at school. However, I like to let them know when they are on the right track.
How the discipline in our classroom works...... Each student is given a number. They use this number on their class papers, homework, and clothespins. Each child's number (on a clothespin) is placed on the E (Excellent) step each day. If they misbehave I first give a verbal warning. If the misconduct continues the student takes a step down the behavior ladder by moving their clothespin from E to S+. Continued misbehavior results in further steps down the behavior ladder with difference consequences for each step. S+ to S-(Satisfactory). S- to N (Needs improvement). N to U (unsatisfactory). If behavior improves during the day, the student is able to earn their way back up the behavior ladder. Each day I keep track of the student's conduct. An E = 100. S+ = 90, S- + 85, N = 75, and a U is equal to 65 points. I average all these marks up to give a weekly conduct grade. This is the grade you receive in the weekly folder and the one I put in the grade book. At the end of the 6 weeks, all 6 grades are averaged together to get the final conduct grade. A student who fights or is sent to the office because of bad behavior will never receive any grade above an N in conduct.
