A THIRD GRADE SURVIVAL GUIDE:

Our Ultimate Goal:

Our ultimate goal for this year is to instill responsibility in each child, independent of the parents.

You can help us achieve this goal by:

Assigning jobs at home. Start out simple with a task in which they can succeed.

Giving your child the opportunity to prepare him/herself for school the next day (books, gym clothes, etc.)

Allowing your child to make mistakes!

CLASSROOM DISCIPLINE

Rules:

1. We will listen and follow directions.
2. We will keep our hands, feet, and other objects to ourselves.
3. We will raise our hand and wait for permission to speak.

5. We will respect ourselves and others.

- 2nd time, Complete Refocus form, student gets a conduct slip, 10 mins. loss of recess.
- 3rd time, Complete Refocus Form, loss of entire recess, parents will be called.

SUBJECT NOTES

Math: The focus of third grade math is multiplication and simple division. The need for learning and committing facts to memory is essential. All math homework should be completed in PENCIL ONLY on LOOSELEAF PAPER.

Reading: TRADE BOOKS are used throughout the year in addition to the basal reader.

Your child needs to read 20 minutes every night. This can be done silently or aloud, independently or with someone.

Your child will be using the Accelerated Reader Program this year. Children should be reading Accelerated Reading books for their 20 minutes of reading each night. This in addition to the 20+ minutes they get in the classroom, should enable them to reach their quarterly goals (given out to each student at the beginning of a quarter). These goals are part of the student's reading grade.

Students will be recognized by Accelerated Reading points achieved as well as number of tests passed.

F.R.O.G.S./M.O.N.K.E.Y BINDERS

Completed papers will be graded and sent home weekly in the F.R.O.G/M.O.N.K.E.Y. binders.

We ask that parents review these papers. If any papers are specified to be SIGNED AND RETURNED, they should be returned in the binder the next day.

NOTE: The F.R.O.G.S.(Fully Responsible, Organized, and Growing Students) binder is used with Mrs. Rowe, the M.O.N.K.E.Y. binder is used with Mrs. Duritsch. These binders are passed out on the first day of school and are used to keep the student organized.

HOMEWORK

To ensure that your child completes all homework assignments accurately and promptly:

Provide a quiet spot for homework

Have a routine homework time

Provide assistance

Designate an area in your home for only your child's school materials

All homework is written on the board each day. It is the student's responsibility to copy it into the plan book. Class time is provided for this.

Please check that the assignments are completed before you sign the plan book every night, even Friday. Your signature tells us that you are aware of this.

Failure of parents to sign the plan book two or more times in a week, results in a Responsibility Demerit and 5 minutes loss of recess for the student for each incident. Parents, please be sure to sign the plan book! Also, feel free to write any notes to the teacher in the F.R.O.G.S./M.O.N.K.E.Y. binder, as they are checked every morning.

Homework is generally given each school night in math and language arts.

We suggest one or more of the following each evening in addition to class homework:

- Practicing Spelling words

- Practicing handwriting

- Reviewing math facts

Homework that is not turned in on the scheduled due date will result in one Responsibility Demerit and loss of recess. Four Responsibility Demerits equals a detention.

PLEASE NOTE THAT RESPONSIBILITY SLIPS ARE ON-GOING, THEY DO NOT CANCEL OUT AT THE END OF EACH QUARTER.

ABSENCES

If your child is absent it is important to make arrangements to have homework picked up or brought home with another child. All homework is expected to be made up. A note is required when your child returns to school.

SNACKS

Snack time is a privilege. We ask that the snacks are healthy (PLEASE REFER TO F.R.O.G.S./M.O.N.K.E.Y. binders FOR SNACK REQUIREMENTS)and that each child is responsible for cleaning up after him/herself. If this becomes a problem, a child could be asked not to bring in a snack.

BOOK CLUBS

Book club orders will be sent home periodically. When ordering books from one of the book clubs (Troll, Scholastic), please make checks payable to the company instead of the teacher or school. This ensures a prompt response.

TESTS

Spelling tests are weekly.

Other subject tests will be announced usually a week in advance.

A study guide is sometimes provided.

Teach your child to study on his/her own and then come to you for a practice test or a drill session.

BIRTHDAYS

Each student is welcome to bring in a treat to celebrate his/her birthday.

These treats are distributed right before lunch for children to eat as a dessert. We would appreciate each serving to be individually wrapped. Please remember that we have no access to serving utensils.
