| LEARNING OBJECTIVES Upon completion of this project, students will be able to: 1) Demonstrate basic computer skills, including the use of browsers, search engines, and email. 2) Use Internet to research renewable sources. 3) Evaluate the suitability of using alternative energy sources considering the impact of the energy source on the environment. 4) Use financial information provided by the Energy Information Administration of the US Department of Energy to determine cost and price estimates for providing power using renewable energy sources. 5) Design and build a model demonstrating how their renewable source of energy generates electricity. 6) Create a brochure selling their alternative source of renewal energy to regional power companies. 7) Make a sales presentation to their class. 8) Use a journal to organize all aspects of the project and record observations and reflections. STATE CURRICULUM STANDARDS New Jersey Core Curriculum Standards: 1) Science: 5.1, 5.3, 5.4, 5.7, 5.8, 5.10 2) Mathematics: 4.1, 4.4, 4.5 3) Language Arts: 3.1, 3.3, 3.4, 3.5 4) Social Studies: 6.9 5) Technology Education: 8.1 and 8.2 6) Cross-Content Workplace Readiness: Standards 1 through 5 TECHNOLOGY IMPLEMENTATION PLAN I have 6 Internet-capable computers in my classroom and I plan to use cooperative groups for the following activities: 1) Read the task 2) Use Internet to research renewable sources. The same groups will be used throughout the project. Roles will be rotated using "eHAT" and students will assume their roles for the day. Groups will reassemble at the end of the period to discuss what was accomplished and report to the teacher via written report. ASSESSMENT STRATEGIES Students will receive individual and group grades daily for this project: 1) Individual grades will be given for productivity during class, the quality of research and journal articles, and oral presentation requirements. 2) Group grades will be given for group participation and projects such as brochure and model construction. OTHER IMPLEMENTATION ISSUES Internet Safety: Review school Acceptable Use Policy (Computer Usage Contract) prior to starting project. Cooperative Groups: Establish roles, groups and assignments randomly (i.e. using "eHat") Backup Plan: Make printouts of data from Energy Information Administration and primary resources in case Internet connection fails in class. |
