Contrast Angiography

*Injection of iodinated contrast material.

Equipment:

Ø      Radiographic table.

Ø      Xray source

Ø      Film changer  4-6 films /seconds

Ø      Image intensifier   connected to TV screens

Ø      Monitoring equipment.

Ø      ECG

Ø      BP monitors

Ø      Pulse Oximeter

Ø      Resuscitation trolley

Catheters:

Polyethylene, polyurethane, Teflon etc.

Guide wire:

Contrast material

Properties: high radiographic density, low viscosity, low toxicity rapid excretion.

Ø      High Osmolality: Ionic

Sodium or megluminum salts of Triiodinated benzoic acid (diatizonate, metizoate)

Ø      Low Osmolality: ionic or non-ionic.

Ø      Non-Ionic: Osmolality closes to plasma, triiodinated benzene ring that is non-ionic

Ø      Ionic contrast.

300-370 mg/ml (iodine contrast) for ordinary Arteriogram.

150-200 mg/ml in digital subtraction Arteriography.

The viscosity is lower in lower concentration and further lowered by warming the contrast.

Dose: 4-5 ml/kg of 300mg/ml medium (i.e. 300-400ml/patient)
