Exercise 1: Underline the action verbs in the sentences below. Place a T over the verb if it is transitive; place an I over the verb if it is intransitive.

 

1. Early settlers hoped for new lives in the United States.

 

2. They explored the new territory.

 

3. Some colonists sailed back to their homeland.

 

4. The other immigrants stayed in the U.S. permanently.

 

5. Lines of people walked to the ship for their voyage across the ocean.

 

6. Eventually, the immigrants completed the journey.

 

7. Most of the people found jobs in America.

 

8. Their previous jobs helps some of them find jobs.

 

Exercise 2: Underline the form of the be verb below. Then draw an arrow connecting the words     

            that are linked by the verb.

 

1. Ellis Island was the busiest immigrant processing center in the U.S.

 

2. The Immigration Service determines whether immigrants will be citizens.

 

3. Citizenship may have been open to people of all origins.

 

4. The atmosphere on the ship seemed exciting.

 

5. Everyone stayed quiet at the very beginning of the journey.

 

6. The waves sounded rough and frightening to the passengers.

 

Exercise 3: Draw one line under each helping verb and two lines under each main verb.

 

            1. The large number of immigrants was considered a threat by some people already living

 

in the U.S. 2. New immigration laws were being passed by congress. 3. Some immigrants were

 

tested to see whether they could read English. 4. Health examinations were given to many others.

 

5. The immigrants should have been warned about the new requirements.

 

Exercise 4: Underline the complete verb phrase in the sentences below.

 

1. After the Civil War, immigration from China was rapidly increasing.

 

2. The immigrants were, at first, hoping to work as laborers for the railroad.

 

3. Congress had, however, passed the Chinese Exclusion Act.
