Act V, Scene i

 

In this scene, Romeo goes to find a pharmacist. In the Middle Ages, a pharmacist mixed drugs to prevent & cure diseases. Simce some of these drugs were poisonous, a pharmacist had to follow strict laws in many city-states. Notice how Romeo is able to persuade the pharmacist to break the law and sell him a poisonous powder.

 

Juliet has been buried in the Capulet’s tomb. Among those who attended her funeral was Balthasar, Romeo’s page. Now Balthasar has come to Mantua to tell Romeo that Juliet is dead.

Act V, Scene ii-iii

 

During the 1300’s, waves of fast-spreading, deadly diseases swept across Europe. The most frightening of these in history was the Black Plague. In 3 years, at least 25 million people dies. The only way to stop the spread of a plague was to isolate the victims. This meant that no one would be allowed to enter or leave an area where there were infected people. In Scene ii, notice how a plague affects the fates of Romeo & Juliet.

 

In Scene ii, Friar John returns to verona to tell Friar Laurence that he was not able to give the letter to Romeo.
