Activity Project for A Raisin in the Sun    ENGLISH 8-5 2007

Lorraine Hansberry, an African American writer in the 1950s and 60s, wrote A Raisin in the Sun and based it in part on her family's experience of moving to the Chicago suburbs. The main characters deal with many social issues which add to their frustrations as they try to make their dreams come true.

To show your understanding of the play, you are to complete the activity below. The evaluation criteria is posted at the bottom of this page so you will know how I will be grading your project. THIS ACTIVITY IS IN LIEU OF A TEST ON RAISIN. IT WILL COUNT AS A TEST GRADE.

Task

.   Summarize and react to TWO events happening in Chicago during the late 1950s and early 1960s involving race at White Flight or Englewood or Chicago's Negro  or Daley's Chicago.. Each summary should be at least a paragraph in length. Each response should be at least a paragraph in length. Please label each summary with the name of the article you read. Please put one event on one sheet of paper and the second on a second sheet of paper. Your reaction is what you think about whichever article you read. You ONLY need to read the areas that apply to the time period we are looking at.
