Humor in Death
Ask
for me tomorrow, and you shall find me a grave man.I am
peppered, I warrant, for this world.
A
plague o’ bothyour houses! (3.1.96-99)
The above quote, taken from William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, display two aspects of Mercutio’s personality. The first aspect displayed by this quote is Mercutio’s humor as seen by the use of a pun as he relates to those present how he is now a ‘grave’ man. Through the use of the pun, Mercutio is stating that not only is the situation a serious (grave) one for he is dying but also that if anyone wishes to see him on the morrow they will find him in his grave. He knows his wound is fatal and that he is dying yet he continues to portray his humor by joking about a very serious situation. The second trait displayed by Mercutio in this quote is his vengefulness as seen in the curse he places on the two families. He wishes harm to the Montagues and the Capulets for it is as a result of their feud that he is dying an untimely death. Both humor and vengefulness, two aspects of Mercutio’s personality, are displayed in the above quote taken from William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet.
