Topic:                        Write a three-paragraph essay contrasting Jane Eyre and Helen Burns and their viewpoint on how to treat other people.

 

            Sample thesis statement: Jane Eyre and Helen Burns differed greatly in their viewpoints on how to treat others   

                                                            in their lives as a result of their life experiences.

 

                        HINT: Jane believed in an eye for an eye.

                                                  Do unto others as they do to you.

                                   Helen believed in turning the other cheek.

                                                  Do unto others as you would have them do to you.

 

Refer to Chapter 5 (p. 46-56) in the novel and the attached passage from the original,

            unabridged novel to reacquaint yourself with each girl’s viewpoint.

 

Due Date:      Rough draft  due in class on the following days:

                                    B class-Wednesday, 11 January

                                    A class-Thursday,     12 January

                        Final draft due BY ALL at 7:55 in the basket in Rm 214 on Tuesday, 17 January

 

Requirements:        1.Original title. Do not underline it or quote it.

                                    2.Objective (third person) viewpoint.

                                    3.Present verb tense.

                                    4.Do not use to be verbs.

                                    5.Use vivid, descriptive words.

                                    6.Strongly worded thesis statement.

                                    7.Essay should be three paragraphs in length.

                                    8.Do not use contractions

                                    9.Correct heading.

                                    10.Compute or type essay.

                                    11.Do not begin any sentence with BUT or BECAUSE.

                                    12.Use grammar, mechanics and vocabulary worthy of an eighth grade student.

                                    13.Use the block method of contrasting in the body paragraph.

 

            Introdcution: Begin generally and proceed to thesis.

            Body:             Be specific. Support your thesis from the knowledge you have gained                                   

                                    from the reading and the discussion. This is where you support and                                      

                                    prove what you said in your thesis statement. Remember I                                                      

                                    have read the novel so do not summarize. Stick to the point and write                                                

                                    concisely and succinctly only dealing with the main idea stated in your thesis.

            Conclusion: Begin with a  restatement of your thesis and proceed to a generally                                       

                                    applicable statement which should follow from the general statement                                     

                                    made in the introduction.
