Two
comparisons can be seen in the stories “Louisa, Please Come Home by Shirley
only to have them reject her when she returns home. With low
self-esteem, Louisa ventures out
into the world lacking familial support and find herself a
new life in a new town. This resolve to
find herself molds Louisa into a new person. Likewise, Maya’s
self confidence is boosted when
she receives guidance from her town’s local aristocrat. This
boost changes Maya into a
composed young woman. Maya feels decisive enough to express
herself in public. He two girls
also have mentors who guide them. Louisa becomes attached to
her landlady, the kind and
motherly Mrs. Peacock. Mrs. Peacock cares for Louisa and acts as
a mother and mentor to her.
Similarly, Mrs. Flowers invites
Maya over one summer afternoon and throws her a lifeline of
learning and in doing so improves Maya’s ability to interact with
people. These two
comparisons, the life-changing conflict both girls overcome and the
mentors who help them
along the way, can be seen in the stories “Louisa, Please Come
Home” by Shirley Jackson and “I
Know Why the Caged Bird Sings”
by Maya Angelou
