Review of Participles

 

            A participle is a verb form used as an adjective.     EXAMPLE:                  The cracking bone hurt terribly.

                        TWO types:     1. present participle – formed by adding -ing to a verb          cracking

                                                2. past participle      -- formed by adding -ed to the verb       cracked

Review of Participial Phrases

 

            A participial phrase consists of a participle and its related words, such as modifiers and compliments, all of which act together as an adjective.

                        EXAMPLES: Approaching the curve, the truck lowed down. WHICH truck slowed down? The one approaching the curve

                                                Acquitted by the jury, the defendant shook hands with his lawyer. WHICH defendant shook hands with his lawyer?

                                                            The one acquitted by the jury

 

PARTICIPIAL PHRASES
