FORMAT FOR A FIVE PARAGRAPH ESSAY ON A FEMALE AUTHOR

 

                Introductory Paragraph  Using the speech and oral techniques discussed in class, begin your essay with a catchy phrase, definition, quote or anecdote. Include a second and or third sentence about the author which would lead your reader to your thesis statement. The thesis should include the name of the author, a mention of how her life experiences affected her writing and if all of the above presents her as a gentle woman. SEE SAMPLES

   Begin with a topic sentence which directs your reader to what the paragraph will include.

       Include in the body:

Birth/Death dates (optional:place???)

Parentage/siblings—Is it pertinent to author’s writing??             

MIP literary awards—Was author prolific?? Do not list all awards or accolades.

Any other pertinent information about life & experiences which could be related to her writings.

   Conclude with a summary sentence.

 

#2 Body IP           Short Story summary & coorelation

Begin with topic sentence which states author’s name & literary work

 

       Include in the body:

Summarize story in 2-4 sentences—Just the plot

State the main theme in general terms

Correlation—How does the writing reflect something from the author’s life?

     Conclude with a summary sentence.

 

#3 Body IP           Opinion This paragraph should be written in FIRST PERSON for it is your opinion.

 

 Begin with your personal definition of a gentle woman, using only one trait which you believe a gentle

 woman possesses

      Include in your body:

Whether you believe your author was a gentle woman or not according to your definition

Support your opinion with a reason or example found in her bio or story or both

 

      Conclude with a summary sentence.

 

Conclusive Paragraph Restate your thesis. Summarize what you wrote about your author’s life and how her life influenced her writing, specifically the story you read. Conclude this paragraph with a statement that reiterates your opinion on  gentleness.
