January 18, 2007 Dear 6th grade parents: In Social Studies we are learning about Ancient Greece. We have been talking about orators, people who were skilled public speakers. As part of the citizenship component of Social Studies, the students were given the following short project to complete and hand in by Friday, January 26th: Think of a community or school issue that is important to you. Write a speech to try to get people to agree with your opinion. You will turn in a written or typed copy of your speech, and you will present your speech to the class. Hints to help you get started: Brainstorm with your family and friends to find an issue that is really important to you. The issue must be one that affects our school or the community you live in. Make sure you use facts to support your opinion. Remember, your goal is to get the rest of the class to AGREE with your opinion. Think of what you will need to say that will make people want to support you. It might help to pick an issue that would be important to other classmates. Use the attached rubric to help you create your speech. You will be graded on the content of your speech, the organization of your speech, the presentation of your speech, and your grammar. Please reread your speech to an adult and ask for helpful criticism. Have fun! If you have any questions, please email me or call me at school and leave a message. Sincerely, Mrs. Markell 437-1339 ext. 207 mrsmarkellsclass@yahoo.com
