Writing Workshop

Quarter 1:

Final Piece – Requirements

Requirement:

You must hand in a piece or pieces of writing you’ve done this quarter that you feel is the best writing you’ve done, or the piece(s) of writing most important to you, and a Reasons Sheet.

Deadline:

Hand in your work during the week of _____________________________. The sooner the better, for me.

How Much Writing to Hand In:

NOTE:

These numbers are MINIMUM amounts.

There is no maximum amount of writing to hand in.

Type of Writing

Requirement

Poetry

30-50 lines of poetry, total.

For example:

Three poems, each with about 15 lines. OR:

Four poems, each with about 10 lines.

Etc.

Prose

About 4 pages of writing total.

For example:

If you wrote some 2-page stories, you can hand in two of them.

Etc.

Mix of

Poetry & Prose

Match your mix to the totals above.

For example:

1 poem, 15 lines long AND 1 story, 3 pages long

If you’re not sure you are meeting the requirement, just show me the writing and ask.

What I’m Grading On:

It’s very hard to grade creative writing! I will give the highest grade if it seems like you are taking your writing seriously. You can do this by…

  • filling in the REASONS SHEET carefully, completely, and convincingly
  • doing your neatest writing or typing on a computer
  • sharing with a trusted friend for editing and suggestions before you share it with me
  • eliminating ALL mistakes in spelling and grammar before I ever see your writing
  • including little “extras” like illustrations and decorations
  • yet not making your writing ugly with too many different fonts, Word Art, and clipart
  • handing in your OWN WORK, with no copying from any other source
  • having no inappropriate language of any kind in your writing
  • never writing anything that will hurt anyone’s feelings
  • having me proof edit your work before turning it in

NOTE:

I wrote some things with my friends. Can I hand those in?

If you’ve been passing paper back and forth in a writing game, I hope it was to help you get writing ideas. If it’s just a bunch of joke lines, it’s probably not what you want to hand in for this assignment. If it turned in to quality work, yes, you can hand it in…as an extra piece of writing you want me to consider. It will be IN ADDITION TO the writing requirements above, if you did not write the whole thing.
