I had the opportunity to be a Redbird for a semester. I spent my student teaching in Spring of 2003 at Alton High School. My cooperating teacher was Mr. Carl Day. I learned a great deal from Mr. Day and it all wasn't about teaching. One of the things that stands out to me about Mr. Day was his desire to write a book about Thomas Custer. Everyone knows about his brother, General George Armstrong Custer, but noone had ever written a book about Thomas Custer, until Mr. Carl Day. The book that Mr. Day wrote is titled "Tom Custer: Ride to Glory." he told the story of Thomas Custer as he teaches his classes. They aren't really lessons, they are stories. I found it quite intimidating when I saw Mr. day teach. I knew that the only thing I could do was try my best. One of the proudest moments during my student teaching was when Mr. Day wrote a letter to the Chair of the Historical Studies at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. Within this letter he expressed how well I did in his classroom with daily management and with teaching the course material. To have someone like Carl Day say that the things he said about me gave me the boost of confidence that I needed. I am grateful to Mr. Day for a wonderful student teaching experience. |
