French Words We Use In English
Some foods...grape, omelette, biscuit, mayonnaise, and the fish plaice.
Also...ambulance, denim, restaurant crayon, dentist, parachute, rectangle, picnic and even margarine!
There are some others which are easy to spot...a la carte, en route, nouveau riche, faux pas and etiquette. Why not ask someone at home to see if they know what these words mean?!
This is an exciting year for you as you start to learn French for the very first time! Perhaps you are a little scared or have heard that it is difficult and there's lots to learn... Well, DON'T WORRY!!! We want to make it enjoyable and fun so there'll be lots of songs, games and quizzes to help you get started. Remember too, we all have to begin somewhere so we don't expect you to be word perfect straightaway. In fact, making mistakes is the BEST way to learn, if not the ONLY way!!
Why not take a look at the list on the right to see how many French words you already know and had taken for granted...You might be surprised!
Here's a challenge for you! Write down as many French words we use in English as you can and hand them in to me at school or e-mail them if you'd prefer. There may even be a prize for whoever finds the most!
