I CAN

Material:  empty soda can
                water
                2 forks or a pair of barbecue tongs
                a large cooking pot half-filled with tap water.
                a 250 ml or more measuring cup

Experiment: First determine the volume of the empty can be filling it with water and
                thereafter pouring the water in the measuring cup. The can is empty.
                Pour a little bit of water in the empty soda can and place the can on the
                hot plate of the stove . Heat the water until it starts boiling: you will see
                water vapor escape from the can. Be very careful and take this hot can
                with the two forks or tongs and quickly turn it upside down in the pot
                of cold water. What do you think is about to happen?

PLEASE PRINT THIS REPORT AND COMPLETE.  Name:___________block:____

Explain :

       1. Explain at a molecular level what happened in the can as soon as you dipped
            it in the cold water.___________________________________________
            _________________________________________________________
           __________________________________________________________

        2.The cold tap water in the cooking pot is at room temperature  which is
           about  20 degrees celsius.Convert in Kelvin   T1 =____________K

           What was the temperature of the water in the can when it started to boil?
                                                                               T2=___________K

       3. Calculate the ratio    T2/ T1    =

       4. You have already determined the volume of the can before it crushed. What was it?

                                                       V2=    ______________ml

        5. Determine the volume of the can after it crushed by filling it again with water and
            transferring the water in the measuring cup.

                                                        V1=  _______________ml

        6. Calculate the ratio     V2/V1  =

        7.  Compare    T2/T1    to    V2/V1  .   Does it make sense?  Explain.
                __________________________________________________________

              ____________________________________________________________

               ____________________________________________________________

         8.  Estimate the pressure that would have existed inside the can if this one had been
              able to resist the crush due to the atmospheric pressure.(P1/T1=P2/T2)

              Give your answer in      _____________________atm

                                                   ____________________ KPa

                                                  _____________________mm  Hg

EVIDENCE      Now that you have done this extra effort, you are entitled to earn an
                    extra point on your grand total IF

                ---- your answers are correct.

                ----you bring the crushed  can and

                ----your report in class on or before the last wednesday of the six weeks!
