North Pole Library

The library offers many stories about the history and traditions of Christmas.  Not to mention many great stories about my darling husband, Mr. Claus.
Pull up a seat by the nice warm fire and enjoy!
Santa Claus
Santa Claus made his appearance in the United States during the 18th Century.  He originated in Europe and followed the Dutch settlers to New York.  However, the Santa that existed in Europe is much different than the plump, jolly, old man in the red suit that we've come to love.  Santa Claus had different names and symbols for many people around the world.

Christmas Tree
The Christmas Tree emerged in Germany in the 17th Century. According to legend, Martin Luther (founder of Protestantism) was strolling through the forest one Christmas Eve and was amazed by the sight of the firs lit with light from the stars above.  Legend goes on to say that he was so stricken by the sight that he brought a tree indoors and decorated it with candles.  Later in history, Queen Victoria (England) received a Christmas tree from her husband Prince Albert (Germany).  Being the first Christmas tree in England, the custom quickly caught on.  It was not long after, that German immigrants spread their custom to other parts of Europe and eventually the United States.  Over time, candles were replaced with Christmas lights, glass ornaments, and other shiny decorations.
