                        form different relationships w/ those around you

                        time of learning about the changes in your body

 

            learn how these changes AND development of life management skills

            lead to more independence and responsibility

PHYSICAL GROWTH

            Def: growth spurt – time of rapid change

                        Male   9 - 13 yrs.

                        Female  11 – 15 yrs.

                                    But as young as 8 and as old as 18 yrs

                       

determined by heredity  

 

def: puberty  - when a boy or girl becomes sexually mature

                        reproductive organs have grown and begun to function

                        capable of having children

 

 

 

 

def:  hormones – chemicals

                                    that affect or control the activity of some body organs

 

            1.  hormones start the growth and development that takes place during puberty

  

            2.  cause the sex glands to mature

                        ovaries  in females

                        testes or testicles  in males

 

            3.  when these glands mature they also make and release hormones

these hormones cause the body changes that changes us into men & women

you begin to understand ABSTRACT IDEAS

that were too difficult when you were younger

            (ex. TIME : “are we there yet”)

 

you begin to understand more about yourself and how you are unique

EMOTIONAL GROWTH

 

some changes are related to levels of hormones in the body

sudden shifts in certain hormones can trigger feelings of

            anxiety

            irritability

            restlessness or

            lack of motivation

 

            can feel happy or sad and not know why

            have outbursts of anger

                         these are normal

                        but you need to learn how to manage them

 

new feelings about appearance

            self-conscious

                        acne / braces

 

learning to accept changes in yourself

            and to deal w/problems is a big part of growing up

Mature people are able to feel anger, disappointment or frustration

            without SHOUTING, HITTING or THROWING THINGS.

 

 

 

SOCIAL GROWTH

 

start to become interested in members of the opposite sex

            but this can happen at different times as you mature

dating different people – helps teens learn

             qualities they like

            and develop social skills

 

def: ABSTINENCE

            saying NO TO SEXUAL INTERCOURSE

                        and INTIMATE SEXUAL CONTACT

 

 

 

DEVELOPING RESPONSIBILITY

 

            SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY is treating all people with respect

                        and considering other people’s needs and wishes

 

            Developing your own set of VALUES (def: ideas about what is important in life) will help you become an Independent and Responsible Adult

                                   

                        Ex:   learning right from wrong  (taught by our families)

                                 Universal values – expected of everyone

                                                Honesty

                                                Loyalty to family & country

                                                Treating others, as you want to be treated

                        These values, combined w/your own set of values,         

                                    will guide your behavior throughout your life

 

Learning to accept and respect the values of other people while upholding your own is and important part of social maturity.

 

 

MATURE PEOPLE recognize that others have

feelings,

 

 

rights,

 

 

opinions

 

 

property

 

 

                that should be respected!!!!!!!!

RELATIONSHIPS

 

            w/Friends

                        often change

                                    begin to look for friends with same values

                                    accept you even if you do not always do or say what they want

 

                        Learning to do what you think is right and

                                    resisting pressure are important life management skills.

                       

 

            w/ Parents

                                    more independent

                                    make more of your own decisions

                                    develop more responsibility for your life
