Planning for the New Baby

 

            Parents-to-be

                        visited a doctor as soon as thought she was pregnant

                                              during pregnancy

            can begin before fertilization to make sure the couple is as healthy as possible

            therefore can produce healthy sex cells

 

            first sign is a missed menstrual period

                        any time a female has had sexual intercourse & misses a period,

                        she might be pregnant

 

 

            def. obstetrician – a doctor  whose practice is limited to caring for pregnant

                                           women  and delivering babies

 

                        gynecologist – a doctor who specializes in women’s problems

                                    Sound waves / Ultra sounds are now used to check

                                                the development of the unborn as to position &

                                                growth

 

Listen to the baby’s heartbeat

use a def. stethoscope – instrument through which a doctor

                                        listens to a developing baby’s

                                                checks the woman’s height & weight each visit

                                                may order a urine or blood test

                                                            for signs of health problems

 

            Woman must follow good health practices

                        2.  eat a balanced diet

 

                        3.  exercise

                                    carrying a developing baby and giving birth are much easier

                                    if a woman has strong, healthy muscles

 

                        4.  AVOID

 

                                    smoking

                                                smoking robs the mother & her unborn of needed oxygen,

                                                vitamins & minerals

 

                                                babies born to smokers usually weigh less

                                                            and are more likely to be sick

A pregnant woman should avoid tobacco, alcohol & other

                                    drugs.  These substances can keep the developing baby from

                                    ex. German measles

                                                if the mother gets German measles during the first

                                                13 weeks of the pregnancy

                                                            babies heart & brain might not grow normally

 

 

            def. miscarriage – the ending of a pregnancy before the developing baby can

                                            live outside of the mother’s body

 

 

 

 

THE BIRTH PROCESS

 

            def. delivery – the birth of a baby

                       

 

            Parents-to-be

                        usually go to class ahead of time

                        visit the hospital

 

            Birth positions

 

                        1. head first

                                    about one or two weeks before delivery

                                    the baby usually turns so his/her head is pointing down

                                    baby moves toward the birth canal (vagina)

                                   

                        2.  Breech birth

                                    any position other than head first through the birth canal

                                                feet first

                                                buttocks first

                                                hands first

Ways in Which a Baby Can Be Born

 

            1.  Muscle contractions move the baby out of the uterus

 

labor – def. the contraction of the muscles of the mother’s

            uterus when the baby is ready to be born

 

2.  Caesarean section – def. operation in which the doctor CUTS

            THROUGH the mother’s ABDOMEN and UTERUS to

            deliver the baby

THE THREE STAGES OF LABOR

 

            Stage ONE:

                        uterus contracts

                                    causes the cervix to open

                        lasts 8 – 24 hours

           

                        ends when cervix opening is as large as the baby’s head

 

 

            Stage TWO:

                        contractions get stronger

                        baby is pushed into the birth canal

                                    face downward

                        baby turns sideways & passes out of the birth canal

 

                        umbilical cord is clamped

                                    then the cord is cutr

 

                        stage lasts about 1 hour

 

            Stage THREE:

                        uterus contracts

                                    placenta & cord (afterbirth) leaves the body

 

                        lasts about 10 mins.

Getting to Know Baby

 

            once the baby starts to breath on it’s own

                       

                        doctor or nurse

                                    wipes fluids from the baby’s nose and mouth

 

                        identification bracelet is attached to the baby

                                    matches the bracelet that the mother wears

                                    and now the fathers also wear identification bracelets

 

                        examined for health problems

 

           

            but as soon as possible

def. bonding – establishing a loving and caring relationship

                                     between parents and baby

 

           

                        the baby is given to the mother and father to hold for a while

 

                        need a quiet time, private time to start to become acquainted with

                        their newborn baby
