Chapter 2                    MALE REPRODUCTIVE SYSTEM

p. 15

MALE REPRODUCTIVE ORGANS

def. GENITALS – sex organs located outside the body

                                    ex. Penis and Scrotum

def. Scrotum – pouch that contains the testes / testicles

Penis like other organs grows during puberty

Size varies but is not important to reproduction

def. FORESKIN – fold of skin that covers the head of the penis (glans)

Circumcision – surgical removal of the foreskin from the penis

                                    usually done shortly after birth

TESTICLES sometimes APPEAR TO CHANGE SIZ

movement of a layer of MUSCLES below the skin in the scrotum

exposed to cold air or cold water

muscles draw close to the body

exposed to warm air or warm water

muscles relax causing the scrotum to hang loosely

p. 16

Male Sex Cells (sperm)

males begin to make sperm during puberty AND this continues till death

QUIZ – for male students on the following AND must be learned in order

Female students may take this quiz for extra credit.

THE PATH OF A SPERM

TESTICLES – made up of many coils which produce sperm

                                      takes 60 days

EPIDIDYMIS – maturing area  ( able to fertilize an egg)

                                       18 hours to 10 days

VAS DEFERENS – stored for a few hours to several months

            SEMINAL VESICLES

PROSTATE GLAND   - both add fluids (fructose & prostaglandin)

                                                for nutrition and protection

Fluids + sperm = now called SEMEN

URETHRA -  >passage way out of the body

A muscle closes off the tube when semen enters

so a man can not urinate and release semen at the same time

p. 17

QUIZ -  >learn the male reproductive system for a quiz

p.18

sperm are some of the smallest living human cells

each sperm has a round like head

                                    a thick middle part

                                                and a long tail

once inside the female reproductive system – a sperm becomes able to move it’s

                                                                         tail

p. 18 & 19

Normal Male Bodily Functions

            1. ERECTION – blood fills the spongy tissue

causing the penis to stiffen and extend away from the body

this usually occurs when the tip of the penis (glans) is stimulated as this\

area has many nerve endings and is very sensitive

            2. EJACULATION – def. Release of semen from the penis

            3. NOCTURNAL EMISSION / Wet Dream

                                    release of semen during sleep

                                    wet dreams are not controllable

Normal to have and some males never has this occur

p. 19 & 20

Care and Precautions

            Good health habits

                        eating healthy foods

                        exercise

                        rest

cleaning the genital area

Uncircumcised males – pull back the foreskin when bathing

will keep bacteria from growing & causing an infection

protect these organs during vigorous activity

                                    wear protective “cups” or straps

will keep the testes & penis from being injured

                                                activities include

                                                            football

                                                            baseball
