Growth Spurts

            Times of fast growth

                        between birth and 6 months

                                    babies weight doubles

                        Adolescence

                                    def. Period of life between childhood & adulthood

 

            growth spurts vary from person to person

                        girls – ages 9 – 13

                                     but as young as 8 and up to 20 years

                        boys – ages 11 – 15

 

                        both gain weight and grow in height

 

 

Sexual Maturity

 

            Puberty – def. The time during adolescence when a boy or girl becomes

                                    Sexually mature

 

 

            capable of having a baby

 

            growth spurt begins & rate of growth depend on HEREDITY

                        def. the passing of traits to offspring from parents

            Parents who mature early often have children who mature early.  Later

            Maturing parents often have children who mature later.

Sex GLANDS

            Female – ovaries

            Male – testes

 

Pituitary gland / “master gland”

            Located in the brain causes makes different hormones

            One starts the GROWTH SPURT

            Another causes SEX GLANDS to MATURE

Dealing w/Skin Problems and Perspiration

 

Sex hormones

            cause oil glands to become active

                        face

                        back

                        chest

            dead skins cells and oil plug pores in the skin

                        swell and fill w/ pus – forming a pimple

                        def. ACNE – occurs when there are many pimples

 

 advice for ACNE

            keep you neck, face, chest, & back clean

            wash more than once per day to remove extra oil

            picking or squeezing can start an infection

            see a dermatologist if problem is serious

 

 deodorants

            sweat glands develop rapidly during puberty

            perspiration or sweat is odorless

                        but when mixes w/ bacteria on the skin – UNPLEASANT ODOR

            

            DEODORANTS help control the odor

EMOTIONAL CHANGES during Adolescence

 

            Are usually related to hormones

                        levels of hormones released into the blood may change suddenly

 

                                    too much or too little

                                                feelings of

                                                            anxiety

                                                            irritability

                                                            restlessness

                                                            lack of motivation

 

 

                                                many of these feelings are POSITIVE

                                                            more adult features

                                                            treated less like a child

                                               

                                                some feelings are NEGATIVE

                                                            feel clumsy

                                                            self-conscious

                                                                        start before others

                                                                        acne

 

                                                accepting  yourself & accepting others is a sign of

                                                            EMOTIONAL MATURITY

 

           

EMOTIONALLY MATURE people recognize that all people have feelings,

                                    rights,  opinions and property that should be respected.

                                    Learning to accept and respect other people is a major

                                    step toward developing mature ways of dealing w/emotions.

            Those who are NOT EMOTIONALLY MATURE  

                                    Think of their own rights and needs

                                    May laugh when it is unkind to do so

                                    Express anger, disappointment or frustration

            Time of changing relationships

                        PARENTS

                                    Adolescence is a time of almost constant adjustment

                                    for parents and for children

                                                patience

 

                                                understanding

                                                            can all help to form a new, more mature,

                                                            family relationship

 

                        FRIENDS

                                    adolescence

                                                begin to look to their friends for help and approval

                                                independent as to making more of your own decisions

 

                                    younger children

                                                seek approval from their families

                                                 decisions made for you
