Weeping Willow

Tree shape to look for.

       
     
Leaves are narrow and have silky hairs on both sides.
 
Catkins open in April. They are about 7cm long and curving upwards.
 
 
   
     
 
Golden Weeping Willow  or
Salix alba 'Tristis' Gaud
  1. Usually found in parks and gardens, by water and on dry ground.
  2. Can grow up to20 metres tall.
  3. Catkins open in April. They are usually male, about 7cm long and curving upwards.
  4. They sometimes have male and female flowers on the catkins.
  5. Leaves are narrow and have silky hairs on both sides.
  6. Branches and shoots are golden
 
 
 
   
Pussy Willow
or Salix Caprea
   


The willow most well known to children is the Pussy Willow - also known as Goat Willow or Great Sallow.
The catkins open on bare twigs in March and April. Male catkins are grey and silky, turning yellow, females catkins are green. Both are about 3cm long.
