Science Department Homework Policy

The Science Department recognizes that homework is needed to gain knowledge and skill, and also to reinforce habits of self-discipline and perseverance necessary for lifelong learning. To this end, the Science Department has established the following policy regarding the frequency and length of homework assignments, as well as how they will relate to the grading scheme:

Students in honors required courses (Honors Biology, IPS) should expect homework 4-5 nights/week that should take 30-60 minutes to complete. Homework will count as 15-30% of the overall grade for the course, depending on the instructor.

Students in general level elective courses (Oceanography, Astronomy, Zoology, Chemistry, Physics) should expect homework 3-5 nights/week that should take 20-50 minutes to complete. Homework will count as 15-30% of the overall grade for the course, depending on the instructor.
