I started with 10 feeder goldfish the end of May when the water was first put in the pond. About 2 weeks after that I added 10 more. I lost several of these first 20 during the next few weeks but the rest were doing very well. Then about the middle of June I added 10 more as well as 3 subukins. This last bunch were evidently infected with something because I lost them within 5 days as well as the subukins and all but 6 of the originals. After transfering these to an inside tank and treating for ick and other diseases, I lost these as well. Back to the drawing board. I bought 2 fantails and 10 more feeders from another source. Currently there are about 8 left and the fantails are doing great. The feeders only cost $.12 apiece but the subukins were $2.99 each as were the fantails. But the fantails are now about the size of the $6.00 ones in the store and most of the feeders are now about 6 inches long. In early September, I added 4 comets, which cost $.25 each and are about 4-5 inches, and 6 more feeders. This last bunch of feeders are black and orange which is different. I ended up with 16 fish total. For the winter months, I set up an inside tank and moved the 2 fantails and 6 others inside. By December, I had put 3 of the larger comets back into the pond and after the first freeze over, you could see them swimming under the thin layer of ice. The fish inside are about 5-6" in length and I can't wait to put them back in the pond in the spring. |
