Independent Science Educator
in Seattle, Washington
Teachers of science must certainly have a strong content background and access to project resources, but perhaps more importantly must also have the pedagogical skills to guide students through solving problems and finding answers to their own questions.  My name in Lindsey Own, and I am an independent science educator who provides opportunities for children and youths to develop an understanding of the natural world that is both deep in content and meaningful to their own personal experience.

Homeschool Support and Traditional Tutoring
with a focus on science skills and meaningful  understanding
Initial one-hour consultation with you and your child:
FREE

see details below for what
      you  can expect from your
      initial consultation

Traditional tutoring:
$20 per hour

Custom science instruction:
$30 per hour (first child)
$5
(each additional child of similar age in the same activity)

(plus the cost of any consumable materials  or admission fees associated with the investigations we embark upon)
What can you expect during the initial consultation?
Our conversations during the initial consultation will vary broadly from family to family.  Foremost, I will try to uncover what your child currently thinks about science and where their natural curiosities lie.
Is your 8-year-old curious about animals and how they exist together in nature?
Is your 13-year-old curious about machines and how they work?
Is your 17-year-old interested in medicine and how different chemicals affect the human body?
Your child's interests will drive the development of any projects we embark upon.

In addition to discussing your child's particular interests, we will discuss what your goals as a family are for learning about science, and any special needs your family may have.

Finally,we will discuss whether my services will fit your learning goals for your child.  We may decide to embark on a series of independent projects in which I will meet with your child twice per week for one hour to help facilitate their independent learning.  Or we may decide to undertake a small-group investigation in which I will meet with several children up to five hours per week to more directly guide their learning experiences.

Most importantly, we will find a way to tailor your child's science education to his or her individual needs and interests, to give your child a deep and meaningful understanding of science concepts and a confident ability to use science skills in his or her daily life!
