Why I Smile

by K. Leigh

Others often ask me,

"Why do you smile so?

What’s the inspiration

Behind your plaintive grin?"

At first I was perplexed

At how to answer them.

I had a joy I knew

But others had it too.

And, true, their smiles were not

So permanently glued.

I knew I had a view

Of life in general

That even in failures

And in our weaknesses

We are able to laugh

At ourselves through the eyes

Of One who can help us.

He sees past the weakness

To where our real need is.

He fills up the sorrow

With hope for tomorrow.

This hope lives on despite

Present trials of night.

Some misunderstand it.

They think I’m mocking them.

But I am just laughing

At the weakness of men.

For I know that someday

These trials will be gone.

They are nothing compared

To my eternal song.

So this is why I smile

So often every day,

In comfort or dismay.

His hope shines all the while.

His truth laughs at the lies.

And I can look through eyes

That see the happiness

Which waits for me and all

Who put their trust in Him.
