Heaven's Song
By R. Curtis
As I lay dying on my bed
Troubled thoughts roam through my head.
My life so short and incomplete
Grieves my soul and robs my sleep.
I wonder how God can be fair
To make my life so much despair,
When others seem so much fulfilled
While living sinfully self-willed.
I choke on tears so discordant
I weep for lives so short and spent.
How is it life's so very quick?
We cannot catch the breath of it.
Lives bold, brash, strong or weak,
Bright and happy, or melancholy sweet,
All are hardly here at all
Before the mist too quickly falls.
But now my eyes behold the throne
And Jesus, standing, welcomes home.
His hands hold out to me with love.
He says "Well done. Come in my son."
And as I walk through the hallowed halls
A haunting melody 'round me falls.
Such music as I've never heard
Such chords within my heart it stirs.
The base is bold, deep and true
The high tones with so pure a hue.
The harmony, beyond compare.
The syntax, perfect, everywhere.
It fills these halls and streets beyond.
It rises in a tumultuous song.
Each echo from the ground it brings
A glorious shout of heavenly beings.
These chords are wraught by the Master's hand
For I know they can't be made by man.
The holy truths these notes portend
Is knowledge only God can send.
And Thus to Him with smiling heart
(Now glad my life was set apart)
"Jesus," I say, "I never knew
Such music from You does ensue!"
"Why did you never tell us, Lord?
Such ignorance we can't afford.
We need this beauty beyond compare;
We need your love it brings out there."
"No, my friend, you always knew!"
He says to me (so shocking, too)
"These notes are made through the hearts of men,
As they expend their lives in them.
Yet while you lived you were too near
To catch the harmony and hear.
You spent your life while giving me
One clear, short, glorious note to be.
But as you stepped beyond death's gate
You came at last to hear it straight,
This glorious song which is sung to me
Through people's lives as they quickly flee.
The background is "Winter" from Gabriel's Graphics.
The music is "Sailing from Mickey's Midis.
