A Special Treat
by K. Leigh

There is a special treat that I like to eat,
Made with little cherries grown tender and sweet.
Well, my mouth might think so, but the box says no.
These cherries are not sweet by the way they grow.
Sugar and corn syrup give them their savor,
Along with a pinch of artificial flavor.

Still I treasure each drop that reaches my tongue,
Having yearned for their flavor since I was young.
The cherry and liquid surrounded by creme,
When shelled in chocolate make a candy dream.
So delicious that you'll imagine a scene
Of delicate sweets being made for a Queen.

"She prefers not to eat her cherries on scone.
She prefers not to have her chocolate alone."
Is the song of the high cook in Spring season
When his assistants ask him for the reason
That vats of vanilla, chocolate, and cherries
Are stored in the kitchen, not in the dairies.

The high cook himself looks over them with glee.
He chooses only the highest quality.
"The Queen will soon want only these with her tea,"
Said he to the low cooks as they faithfully
Poured chocolate into molds and cordialed the creme.
"Keep stirring, keep stirring, don't let up your steam!"

"You droppers of cherries, don't give me a fright!
You fillers of cherry liquid, fill just right!
The Queen will eat these cordial cherries tonight!"
And so ends the candy dream with one last bite.
