Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio
Maid Marian
Biography - www.hollywood.com

Strikingly beautiful and classically trained Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio made her screen debut as Gina, the sister of Tony Montana (Al Pacino), in Brian De Palma's "Scarface" (1983). Mastrantonio trained as a singer, not an actress; a lyric soprano, she spent her teen years singing at Opryland's theme park. After working as an extra in "Coal Miner's Daughter" (1980), she hit New York, appearing in "Amadeus" (1982), the workshop of Stephen Sondheim's "Sunday in the Park with George" (1983) and several other shows. Even after her film successes, Mastrantonio
returned to her first love, appearing with the New York Shakespeare Festival through the 1980s. 5After her hit in "Scarface", she began her TV career as the dictator's daughter in the miniseries "Mussolini: The Untold Story" (NBC, 1985). Thus far, Mastrantonio's only other TV experiences have been a PBS adaptation of "Uncle Vanya" (1991) and a voice cameo on the comedy "Frasier" in 1995. 5Martin Scorsese, who had cut her from "The King of Comedy" in 1983, was so impressed with her performance, however, that he cast her as the female lead in "The Color of Money" (1986). Her performance as Tom Cruise's streetwise girlfriend earned her an Oscar nomination as Best Supporting Actress. Two rather unremarkable films followed, the thriller "Slam Dance" (1987) and action comedy "The January Man" (1989). But Mastrantonio subsequently played feisty, individualistic women: as a steely action heroine in "The Abyss" (1989), a smart lawyer in "Class Action" and a feminist Maid Marian in "Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves" (both 1991). Mastrantonio reteamed with "January Man" co-star Kevin Kline as his betrayed wife in "Consenting Adults" (1992). After an absence of three years (while living in London), she returned to the screen as a single mother in the treacly "Three Wishes" and as Al Pacino's daughter in "Two Bits" (both 1995). 5Mastrantonio returned again to the stage, opposite Anthony LaPaglia in 1995's "Northeast Local". She is married to Irishman Pat O'Connor, who directed her in "The January Man" and "Fools of Fortune" (1990).
