Solving Equations

ex.
1.a linear equation
5y-6=2-4y
7   7
7(5y-6)=7(2-4y)
    7   7
5y-6=7(2-4y)

5y-6=14-28

5y-6+28=14-28+28

5y+28-6=14

33y-6=14

33y-6+6=14+6

33y=14+6

33y=20

33y=20
33y  33y

20
33y

y=.61

multiply both sides by 7

distribute the seven

add 28 to both sides

combine like terms

add 6 to both sides

combine like terms

divide both sides by 33y

33ys cancel out

divide by 33

Good now here's a Literal Equation

Mass Spectrometer

Q =V              :Q
M  Br

M x Q = V   x M
      M = Br

Q = V  x M
      Br

You have your problem, and you need to solve for Q.

Multiply both sides by M in order to get Q by itself.

You get your answer which can't be reduced anymore.

Here's an equation for a line.

a line containing the origin and
(-3, -5) using slope intercept form, which is y=mx+b
(0,0)    (-3,-5)

   Y2-Y1
   X2-Y1

x1    y1      x2    y2
( 0,  0)      (-3 , -5)

     -5-0
     -3-0

 Slope = -5 or 5
              -3    3

y=5 x +b
    3
0=5(0)+__
    3
0+0=0

Y=5x+0
     3

To find slope, or m, use slope formula and ordered pairs

Plug ordered pairs into slope formula and get slope

To find b plug one set of ordered pairs back into original problem

find what b is equal to

rewrite your equation
