Brooke's Best Tips
for Algerbra

Linear Equation

4(b-3) = -8                                  Distribut the 4 to the b and 3
 4b-12 = -8                                       Add the 12 to both sides
     +12    +12
       4b = 4                                      Divide by 4 on both sides
        4     4                                      The fours cancel out each
         b = 1                                       other and b equals 1

   Literal Equation

Solve for R

        V = IR                                       Divide both sides by I
         I      I                                        The two I's cancel out

             = R                                    R equals V divided by I
            I

Y-intercept Form

Solve for a line containing the origin and (-3,-5) and put it in y-intercept form.

-5-0 = -5   =  5         Plug in the two points to find the slope
-3-0    -3        3          The two negative numbers makes the slope
                                  positive.
Y= 5 x                       There is not a y-intercept because it
      3                          crossed the y axis at 0.
