Colin's Equations
Being a wizard in math is easy
Solving for a Variable
Equations Comments
x+3=x-17
6To find x first you must multiply each side by 6 to get rid of the denominator. 6x+18=6x-102
6Now you divide 6x and 18 by 6. x+3=6x-102
Get x on a side by itself by first subtracting x from each side then adding 102. 105=5x
To complete getting x on a side by itself you have to divide by 5 on each side. 21=x
X is now found and the equation is complete.
Literals equation
Solve for b2
A=(b1+b2)h
2To get rid of the denominator you must multiply each side by 2. 2A=(b1+b2)h The parentheses must be eliminated and to do this you must divide each side by h 2A=b1+b2
hNow subtract each side by b1 2A-b1=b2
hYou equation is now solved

Linear Equations
Write the equation of a line going through the points (2,3) and (4,11) Put the coordinates in the equation for slope which is (Y2-Y1)/(X2-X1) 11-3
4-2Now simplify the like terms 8
2Kept simplifing 4 Put this in your y=mx+b equation y=4x+b Now insert a coordinate 3=4(2)+b When you solve for be (if you do not know how refer to Solving equation for variables) you will get b=-5 y=4x-5 You have found the slope-intercept equation for the line that goes through (2,3) and (4,11) -4x+y=-5 To get standard-form of the equation you have to subtract each side by 4x 4x-y=5 Then you multiply each side by -1 because you can not have a negative or a decimal x. This is the standard-form equation y2-y1=4(x2-x1) Just put in the corresponding coordinates in this equation y-3=4(x-2) You have now put the y=mx+b in point-slope form
