Life Science - Plants
State Standard Code
S2b Life Sciences Concepts: The student produces evidence that demonstrates understanding of life cycles of organisms and that all plants and animals have life cycles.
S5b Scientific Thinking: The student uses concepts from Science Standards 1 to 4 to explain a variety of observations and phenomena.
S6a Scientific Tools and Technologies: The student uses tools (such as rulers, magnifiers, etc…) to gather data and extend the senses.
S7a Scientific Communication: The student represents data and results in multiple ways, such as drawings, diagrams, and artwork, and technical writing.
S7b Scientific Communication: The student uses facts to support conclusions.
S7c Scientific Communication: The student communicates in a form suited to the purpose and the audience, such as writing instructions that others can follow.
S8a Scientific Investigation: The student demonstrates scientific competence by an experiment, such as conducting a fair test.

Lesson Description
The students will conduct research on how to plant a lima bean the following two ways: (1) using tissue paper (2) using soil. Then, the students will type step-by-step instructions on how to plant the lima beans two different ways, using Microsoft Word.
Next, they will conduct the two experiments. At this point they are to create a hypothesis of what will happen to each of their experiments using PowerPoint. The next step is to take pictures with the classroom digital camera of their experiments. These pictures will then be uploaded onto the computer and used in their final PowerPoint presentation.
The PowerPoint presentation must include the following:
· The student’s Hypothesis.
· Pictures of their two different plant observations.
· Observations written of their pictures of what changes have occurred.
· Details on what they did to maintain their plant growing and healthy.
· Finally, whether any or both of their hypothesis were correct and why.
The research and learning process will be conducted by using a teacher-created curriculum page, online videos (United Streaming), online provided websites, our science textbook, and nonfiction plant books from our school library.
