Lansing grad killed in car crash

GROTON A 2002 Lansing High School graduate was killed in a one-car accident sometime Monday night or Tuesday morning, according to the Tompkins County Sheriff's Office.

Eugene P. Moon Jr., 22, who was also known as Charlie, was found at about 6:10 a.m. Tuesday inside a green Nissan that was off the side of Peruville Road about one-half mile east of the Sheldon Road intersection. Moon was pronounced dead at the scene.

The sheriff's office said Moon was traveling westbound on Peruville Road when the car traveled off the right side of the roadway and struck a ditch. The vehicle then struck a tree and rolled over several times before coming to rest on its roof. The sheriff's office said the time of the accident has not been determined but residents in the area reported hearing a noise at about 1 a.m.

Moon, who graduated earlier this year from the State University College at Cortland, was described by a family friend and former coach as an outstanding athlete and upstanding community member.
Moon played football for three years at Lansing under former Head Coach Ed Redmond, who is the school's athletic director. Moon was named to the Section IV all-star team in football and sprinted at the New York State high school track championships.

He never really talked about his abilities, Redmond said. He was a quiet and humble kid. He was liked by everyone and was a kid who was very grounded and close to his family. He just carried himself the way you would want your son to carry himself. He was a real classy kid.

Redmond said that despite his athletic ability, Moon always put his team first.

Charlie was a kid that gave it all for his teammates, he said. He was the epitome of a team player. He had all the reason in the world to be selfish and self-centered the way a lot of star athletes are, but he was certainly a team player and the team always came first with Charlie. He was there to help the whole team succeed. Charlie will long be remembered as a member of the Lansing football family. He will certainly be missed by all of us.

Moon is the son of Eugene Moon Sr. and Jan (Bledsoe) Moon.

Calling hours will be from 4-7 p.m. Thursday at the Lansing Funeral Home, 32 Auburn Road, Lansing.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the Lansing United Methodist Church, 32 Brickyard Road, Lansing.
