| Highlighted by a pitch-perfect Tobey MaGuire with his starry-eyed persona perfect for the lead role of Homer Wells, The Cider House Rules is by far Lasse Holstrom's best work. It's a coming-of-age story about a sheltered young adult who decides to leave the orphanage in which he was raised for his first time and explore what's out there. He ends up getting a lot more than he bargained for in his journey. At his orphanage in Maine, Wells is the orphan director's medical protege. Played by Michael Caine with wisdom and sincerity (although i'm not entirely sure it merited an acting oscar but then again Michael Caine is great and anytime someone wants to give him an oscar I won't complain) the character of Dr. Wilbur Larch is a controversial figure because he offers abortions to anyone who comes by reguardless of state law. The two have formed an endearing father-son relationship from which Homer wants to run away. He spontaneously decides to hitch a ride from an incoming couple and gets a job at an apple orchard. Along his journey, Homer falls into and out of love, witnesses incest, and experiences the throes of working class life and feelings of despair among his fellow migrants all of which he takes in with a wide-eyed curiosity and, more admirably, the courage to act on his convictions when he needs to. Cider House Rules tells a complex story in a poignantly bittersweet tone set against a beautiful the oranges, reds and blues of Maine in Autumn. |
