I believe our biggest problem in the world is nuclear weapons. I worry that countries that possess nuclear weapons might have leaders who want to seek revenge against other countries or they only care about winning wars. There is no doubt that aids, genocide, hunger and many other problems are very significant and shouldnt be ignored but, as students living in the second safest city in the nation (Mission Viejo), I believe we underestimate the power and risk of nuclear weapons. All we have to do is learn from history and look back to Nagasaki and Hiroshima and how those two atom bombs, small by todays standards, wiped out hundreds of thousands of people in a matter of seconds. Were shocked when we think of a passenger plane hitting the World Trade Center and killing 3,000 people. If the plane had contained a nuclear weapon, millions could have been killed and New York City would be closed for decades due to radiation. How do we know what the people who control each countrys nuclear weapons are thinking? Are the leaders madmen? Are the nuclear weapons safe so that madmen cant get control of them? These are questions that must keep awake at night with worries. South Korea is a country that claims to have nuclear weapons so that other countries, especially North Korea, wont ever think about attacking them. I worry that a terrorist from North Korea, not representing the government, will attack South Korea and the response will be to drop a nuclear bomb on North Korea. Why do we have to wait for people to die? Cant we learn from World War II that innocent people die when nuclear weapons are used? We need to get control of the nuclear weapons problem now, or else the rest of the worlds problems wont make any difference.
