Identify
a)      �Women�s War�- The women demanded a voice in decision that affected them.  So they armed themselves with machetes and sticks and launched a full scale revolt.

b)      Negritude- African roots were expressed during this movement. Many French-speaking writers awaked this self-confidence among Africans.

c)      L�opold Senghor- He was a great Senegalese poet, who celebrated Africa�s rich cultural heritage. He also fostered African pride by rejecting negative views spread the colonial rulers.

d)      Atat�rk- Mustafa Kemal or Atat�rk was a nationalist that overthrew the sultan and declared Turkey a republic. Around the 1930s, he launched a program of radical reforms.

e)      Reza Khan- He was another to modernize his country, and make it independent, which was Iran. He moved to replace the Islamic law with amore secular and encouraged women to take part in public life.

f)        Pan-Arabism- This was a nationalist movement that was built on the shared heritage of Arabs. It emphasized their common history and language and recalled the Golden Age of their civilization.

g)      Balfour Declaration- In 1917, this was issued to win the support of European Jews. It said that the British would set up a national home for the Jewish people.

�        Apartheid- Policy of strict racial separation in South Africa that was abolished in 1989.

Africans resented colonial rule because they were forced of the best lands, and the British made all Africans carry identification cards and restricted where they could live or travel.
Pan-Africanism was an expression of African nationalism because it emphasized the unity of Africans and people of African descent around the world.


 
Turkey and Iran sought to modernize their countries by using nationalism and to overthrow the leader and declaring it and independent state. They were both modernized to a secular state or by secular laws.
Modernization was linked to nationalism because after World War I, people felt immense nationalism and felt that their countries had to be modernized.


 
Arabs resented the mandate system because they were promised independence for helping the Allies in WWI. Even though, they did not get independence and were under European control.
Palestine became a center of conflict because Arabs were promised their own kingdoms in Palestine during WWI. But Britain issued the Balfour Declaration in 1917 that stated Palestine belonged to the Jews.
