Ch. 19 Review the Facts, #1-9



   1. There was discontent with the old regime in France because the members of the First and Second Estates had privileges that those in the Third Estate did not have. Additionally, members of the Third Estate, were forced to pay unfair taxes that the other Estates did not pay.
   2. A crowd stormed the Bastille because they believed that weapons and gunpowder were being held there.
   3. The slogan of the French Revolution was "Liberty, Equality, Fraternity."
   4. In 1793, Louis XVI was put on trial as a traitor and sentenced to death. In January of that year, he was executed. Later that year, in October, Marie Antoinette was also executed.
   5. The Reign of Terror was France under the lead of Maximilien Robespierre. 40,000 people died during the Reign of Terror.
   6. Napoleon made many reforms, all centered on modernizing France. He regulated the economy to control prices, encouraged new industry, and built roads and canals. He also made peace with the Roman Catholic Church and gave peasants more rights.
   7. Napoleon tried to increase European power in France by basically destroying any and all the powerful leaders around Europe. He developed a new plan for each battle, so opposing generals could never anticipate what he would do next.
   8. The result of Napoleon's invasion of Russia was being forced to turn back after they reached Russia. Only 100,000 soldiers survived and many died or were deserted. Napoleon's reputation for success had shattered.
   9. The chief goal of the Congress of Vienna was to equally and fairly restore power back to Europe. They did this by establishing a balance of power and by protecting the system of monarchy.
