June 16th, 2001:
THE MARINERS WENT INTO THE FIRST GAME OF A DOUBLEHEADER WITH THE GLENDALE YANKESS WITH A RECORD OF 5-1.

The Mariners won the first game behind great pitching by Darrin Licausi, and some timely hitting in the sixth inning. They got on the board first with one run in the bottom of the first. After a lead of walk, Darrin stole second and was moved over to third on a ground ball out. Dave Pickering then hit a flyball to right that was misplayed by the Yankee right fielder, scoring the run. The Yankees tied it up in the third, but the Mariners took the lead back in the fifth with an unearned run. In the sixth, the Yankees tied it up again, on one of the only mistakes Darrin made all day, when they hit a solo homer, but the M's put up 5 runs in the bottom of the inning to go ahead for good. Rob Carlson lead off with a walk, and stole second, and Frank Alberson walked to put two men on with only one out. Bill Johansen then hit a double that would score both Rob and Frank. Butch Carlson hit a single that would move Bill to third. Bill then scored on a passed ball, and Butch moved up to second. Mike Steichen then hit an RBI single and stole second, and then scored on Jim Hendricks single. The Mariners would add one more run in the bottom of the seventh when Eric Johansen singled, moved to second on a balk, and then scored on Darrin's double. With a 6 run lead Darrin closed out the game with 5 strikouts in the last 2 innings to give him a total of 17 k's on the day.

In the second game, the Mariners could not come back from an early deficite and dropped only their second game of the year. They jumped out on top with two runs in the first on Bill Johansen's second 2 run double of the day, but with a man on second and nobody out, they were unable to scratch together anymore runs in the inning. In the bottom of the inning the Yankees got 4 runs, 3 coming on a home run. The Yankees added another run in the bottom of the second on a leadoff solo home run. The Mariners were unable to score again until the fifth, when Rob Carlson lead off with a single, and then moved to second when Dave Pickering walked. Rob moved to third on a fielders choice and then scored on a wild pitch, cutting the lead to 6-3. After another wild pitch moved Bill Johansen to third, he was caught napping and got picked off. The M's then got another run in the top of the sixth when Butch Carlson reached on an error, stole second, went to third on a wild pitch and scored on a passed ball. In the bottom of the inning however, the Yankees scored 2 more runs to put the Mariners down by 4. The M's put one more run up on the board but ran out of steam. The Mariners record now stands at 6-2.

May 19th, 2001:
The Mariners record goes to 4-0 with a doubleheader sweep of the Pirates. The Mariners won the first game 11-0, with the help of solid play in the field, on the mound and at the plate. The Mariners jumped ahead in the bottom of the first with 6 runs on 5 hits, then added two more runs in the 3rd inning and finally 3 more in the 6th on Brandon Denoyer's MONSTER homerun that measured out to about 450' (give or take). Jim (K this guy) Hendricks pitched 6 magnificent innings, striking out 10 and only allowing 4 hits, on his way to his second Mariner victory.
In the second game, Ben Narter made his first start of the year, and after pitching one inning of the first game, came out and pitched 3 strong innings to start the Mariners off. After sputtering at the plate the first two innings, the Mariners got a run in the top of the 3rd, but failed to scratch across another when Jim Hendricks was called out on a close play at the plate to end the inning. The Pirates scored one run in the bottom of the inning to tie up the ballgame at one apiece. In the bottom of the 5th, the Pirates got 4 unearned runs to go ontop 5-1 going into the 6th inning. Dave Pickering leadoff with a single and after Brandon Denoyer reached on an error, and Butch Carlson singled to load the bases, Scott Adams hit a 2 RBI single to bring the Mariners within two. After a fly out to left, Mike Steichen and Jim Hendricks hit RBI singles to tie it up, and then pulled a double steal from first and third to score the go ahead run. After a holding the Pirates scoreless in the bottom of the 6th, the Mariners got consecutive walks from Darrin Licausi and Rob Carlson to start the inning. Dave Pickering then hit an RBI double, and Brandon Denoyer hit an RBI single to give the M's a 3 run lead, but they were not done there. After Dave Pickering scored on a passed ball and Butch Carlson's third walk of the double header, Jim Palmer hit an RBI single, Butch scored on a passed ball, Mike Steichen hit another single, and Jim Hendricks hit a 2 run double to really break the game open. After a groundout moved Jim Hendricks to third, he scored on yet another passed ball to finish the Mariners scoring. In the bottom of the 7th, Jim Palmer got the first two guys, then gave up a hit down the left field line that Darrin Licausi tracked down and fired in to second where the runner was trying for two. Scott Adams put the tag on him to end the game and give the M's a 14-5 win.

May 6th, 2001:
The Mariners won their second game, beating the Weasels 16-3 to go 2-0 on the season, despite only having 9 players. The Mariners went ahead in the top of the first when Darrin Licausi lead off with a single, and then stole second. Rob Carlson followed with a single of his own that moved Darrin to third. After Rob stole second to put two runners in scoring position, Frank Alberson hit a single to score Darrin. Unfortunately, after an out and then a walk, no more runs would score in the inning. The Mariners put up 4 more runs in the second inning when they got 5 straight hits to start the inning. Jim Palmer hit a leadoff double, went to third on Eric Johansens single, and after Eric stole second, they both scored on Darrin's double. Rob got a bunt single that moved Darrin to third and then stole second. Frank then hit an RBI single and stole second, and then went to third on a passed ball that scored Rob. In the third inning the Mariners took advantage of a couple of mistakes by the Weasels and broke the game open with 7 runs in the inning. After a walk, two hits, and two errors, Brandon Denoyer hit a 2 RBI double, and Butch Carlson hit a 2 RBI single and after stealing third, scored on a past ball. The Mariners tacked on 4 more in the 4th after 4 more straight hits by Jim, Eric, Darrin and Rob. Jim pitched 5 innings of 1 hit ball to pick up his first win of the year, and Michael Kammes made his Mariner debut, pitching the last 2 innings of the game.

April 28th, 2001:
The Mariners Season kicked off with a single game against the Blacksox. The Mariners went ahead in the first inning after Ken Arndt was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. In the second inning the Mariners added 3 more runs when Kirk Johansen hit an RBI double with two men on and nobody out. With runners on second and third Eric Johansen hit a sac fly to left. Then after two walks Bill Johansen grounded into a fielders choice to score the fourth run of the day. After a leadoff double and a walk in the fourth inning, Jim Palmer hit an RBI single, and Jason Luethje followed with an RBI single of his own to put the Mariners up 6-0. Jim Palmer only gave up 1 run through the first four innings of play, but the Blacksox pulled closer in the fifth when they scored on a leadoff homerun and picked up another run in the same inning on a couple of singles. In the sixth inning, Jim Palmer got a grounder with one on and one out, and Rob Carlson couldnt turn the doubleplay. After that the Blacksox got two straight singles and a homerun to take the lead 7-6. The Mariners came back in the seventh when Darrin Licausi lead off with a walk and took second on a wild pitch. Rob Carlson then hit an RBI single to left to tie the game up. After Rob stole second Bill Johansen got an infield single, and Frank Alberson crushed a double to score the go ahead run. Ken Arndt then ripped a two run double to put the Mariners ahead for good. Jim Hendricks pitched three innings, while striking out six and picked up the win.

April 22nd, 2001:
The Baseball gods could not withstand the persistant rain dancing of Jim Palmer and Ken Arndt (not to mention the constant rain cloud that follows Jim Hendricks around), as the Mariners season opener against the Weasels was canceled do to a sudden blast of precipitation. Stay tuned here for more news as the season goes on.
