List of corrections I made when interview tape was
re-translated for me into English.
I wrote down this list on December 11, a few
hours after the interview was over.
- According to the English
re-translation of the tape, I said that my health was fine and that I
could participate in the interview.
This is not correct. I
actually said that I was feeling some effects of electronic harassment,
but could still participate in the interview.
- According to the English
re-translation of the tape, I said that I had been unable to find a hotel
room in Paris while waiting to submit an application for asylum. This is not correct. I actually said that I had been unable
to afford to pay for a hotel room in Paris while waiting to submit my
application for asylum.
- According to the English
re-translation of the tape, I said that in describing the symptoms of
electronic harassment I have suffered I refer to the statement I had
already given to the federal office, and I said that in Germany I had been
having additional problems also.
This is not correct. I
actually said that the statement I had submitted to the federal office
described symptoms of harassment I had suffered while in Germany, but that
in the USA I had been having all of these problems too, and additional symptoms
as well which were not listed.
- According to the English
re-translation of the tape, in describing my main reasons for applying for
asylum, one of the reasons I stated was “persecution”. This is not correct. Instead, I actually had stated
“political persecution” as one of my main reasons for applying for asylum.
- According to the English
re-translation of the tape, I described once going to a restauraunt while
an undergraduate at UC San Diego and being told I would have difficulty
thinking in the future. There was
an ommission. I also stated the
approximate date this occurred, which was between September 1986 and May
1987.
And also, this was a slight misstatement on my
part. I was not told this, I overheard
one of the cashiers saying this to another cashier, and laughing about it.
- According to the English
re-translation of the tape, I said that as an undergraduate at UC San
Diego I had episodes in which I suddenly felt dizzy, and then must sleep
for 3 or 4 hours. This is not
correct. I actually said that I
would suddenly feel dizzy, and then would feel sleepy for the next 3 or 4
hours.
- According to the English
re-translation of the tape, I said that my problems of harassment stopped
in 1991 when I finished at UC San Diego.
This is not correct, and gives the impression I had no problems
between 1991 and 1996. What I
actually said was that the sudden spells of dizziness stopped in 1991.
- According to the English
re-translation of the tape, I said that Taun Nguyen had a lot to do with
the harassment I suffered during January of 2002. That is not correct. I actually said that Taun Nguyen had
been involved in the harassment I suffered during January of 2002, and
that I was certain because I had recognized him very clearly.
- According to the English re-translation
of the tape, I said that I did not know how many people were members of
the political group I had been working with. This is not correct.
I actually said that I was not sure, but could estimate the number
to be about 100.
According
to the English re-translation of the tape, I said that as part of my political
activity I had been trying to expose things which had happened at UC
Berkeley. This is not correct. I actually said that I had been trying to
make the students and faculty of
