I CAN'T GET STARTED
Music by: Vernon Duke
Lyrics by:
Ira Gershwin
The Song: One of the biggest hits of the era, the song was written for the Broadway show "Ziegfeld Follies of 1936", but what really swung it into musical immortality was the hit recording by trumpter/vocalist Bunny Berigan in 1937. The words are sometimes altered to fit the time-frame and gender of a performer.
Homefront: "I Can't Get Started" is the song playing in the Purl Roadhouse when Linda and Al are getting to know each other in "Patriots". The song was also featured in "Spanish Moss", in the scene when Al tells Hank, Linda and Jeff that he will soon be marrying Anne.
Lyrics:
I've flown around the world in a plane,
I've settled revolutions in Spain,
And the North Pole I have charted,
Still I can't get started, with you.

On the golf course I'm under par,
Metro Goldwyn have asked me to star,
I've got a house-a showplace,
Still I can't get no place, with you.

'Cause you're so supreme
Lyrics I write of you, I dream
Dream day and night of you
And I scheme, just for the sight of you
But oh, what good would it do?

I've been consulted by Franklin D.,
Robert Taylor has had me to tea,
Still I'm broken-hearted,
'Cause I can't get started with you.
