Calculating Distances

Use the World Book Distance Calculator to find the distance between two locations.

To view the Distance Calculator, click the left button of the View control or choose Distance Calculator from the View menu.

By default, the Distance Calculator opens when you launch the application.

To find the distance between two locations:
1. Type a starting location in the Location 1 field and press the Return key on your keyboard. Locations will be automatically completed as you type. Alternatively, you can select a location from the list by clicking the arrow button to the right of the entry field and then clicking any place name.
2. Type an end location in the Location 2 field and press the Return key, or also select it from the list.

The distance between the two selected locations is shown above the Navigation Map.

Below each Location field you can see the latitude and longitude of the selected location.

The selected locations are marked on the globe and the Navigation Map. The globe rotates to center the locations, and a line is plotted between the markers on the Navigation Map.

To see a certain location, click the Go To Map button after specifying a location in the Location field.

To clear the fields, click the Clear button above the field you want to clear.

The Distance Calculator can also show the distance between a location you have selected and a place where you position your pointer on the Navigation Map.

Working with the Navigation Map and the Flat Map

The map located at the bottom of the Distance Calculator window is the Navigation Map. You can use this map to select locations by their latitude and longitude. Using the Navigation Map you can also switch to a large map view.

To select locations on the Navigation Map, move the pointer over the map and click the place you want. While moving pointer, you will see vertical and horizontal lines on the map and the location's latitude and longitude in the Location field. This helps you find an exact location on the map. By entering another location in the same way, you can determine the distance between any two points on the Earth.

To open the large Flat Map View, double-click the Navigation Map.

You can drag the Flat Map to get a better view of the selected locations.

To center the locations you have entered on the Navigation Map, click the Center Locations on Map.
