Dear Parents and Guardians,

2003 is in its early stages but already we are seeing the tragedies and triumphs of the human spirit.  These events are all signs that are meant to draw us, each in their own way, into a relationship with the Lord and with one another.  We are perhaps on the brink of war and yet at the same time we see the Korean people, at first thought to be a grave threat, now engaging in dialogue.  We see in our own Metro-Detroit community the realities of racism, poverty and division and at the same time we see glimmers of hope as community groups, churches and neighbors beging to work toward understanding one another.  The Kingdom of God is here.....but not yet fully.....

I want to share with you some joyful news that I have shared with Fr. Sadjak, my colleagues and the students.  I am beginning the process of applying for admission to a program for priestly formation with the
Oblates of St. Francis De Sales, Toledo-Detroit province.  Many of you may know them from their time running Salesian High School (Detroit) and Aquinas High School (Southgate).

With this decision comes much joy and peace in my life.  I love teaching at Notre Dame and enjoy my life outside of work very much as well.  In all of this though, i have been discerning, searching, seeking, what in life will make me complete, where does my identity lie?  The most fervent and joyful answer for me, the one that makes me feel fulfilled, is to live my life serving the Church as a priest, pastor and fellow pilgrim Christian.  There is no one and nothing I could love more and my time teaching at Notre Dame has helped me see and recognize that with confidence.

Because of the commitment that priestly formation and study requires, I will not be teaching at Notre Dame next fall.  Whenever we make commitments, doors open but only after we decided to close others.  I am sad to leave the Notre Dame community after this school year, but joyful knowing I will serve the Church in more diverse and challenging role which will not limit my talents and which will challenge me to grow deeper as a person.

Please hold me in prayer in the next few months as I prepare to make a great leap of faith and transition.  Know that I do the same for you and your sons.

Sincerely,

Shaun Lowery
