Part 1 of this assignment is the research part and it should take around 2 periods. Each student will choose one explorer to research from the following list and will record their information either on Microsoft Notepad files, or another text editing program.

    John Cabot
    Jacques Cartier
    Christopher Columbus
    Samuel De Champlain
    Captain James Cook
    John Franklin
    Simon Fraser
    Martin Frobisher
    Samuel Hearne
    Henry Hudson
    Henry Kelsey
    James Knight
    Alexander Mackenzie
    James Palliser
    Pierre Radisson
    David Thompson
    George Vancouver
Here are some key questions to ask your students.
Since each student is reasearching a different explorer, some of these questions may not be able to be answered for each explorer. However, most answers should be obtainable on the web sites provided.

    1. Where was your explorer born?

    2. On what date where they born?

    3. On what date did they die?

    4. What was the home life like for your explorer when they grew up?
What type of family did they come from? Were they raised by both parents?

    5. Did your explorer get married? To Whom?

    6. Did they have children? How many? Are any of them famous?

    7. Why did your explorer want to explore?

    8. Tell me using as much detail as you can about their exploring?

    9. Do you feel your explorer was successful? Why or why not?

    10. Was anything named after your explorer? Go to our globe and find it.

Part 2 of this assignment is the web page creation part and should also take 2 hours at least. Give more time to those students who need it.
Part 3 of the assignment is the presenting part. I suggest dividing the class so there are 5 students presenting at the same time. Each student present their web page to a group of 4 students. This part is necessary to ensure that students are familiar with at least some of thier peer's research. If the students are merely assigned free time to read each other's pages, they will likely become off task. It is not necessary to mark this part unless you want to evaluate their presentation skills.
